Some people say it’s less of a game and more of an interactive painting. What that story is, however, is up for debate. Truly one of the best quality games on Gamepass or anywhere else.Similarly, Gorogoa also manages to tell a story without a single word in the actual gameplay. But to have made a seamless and frankly flawless story that could be enjoyed as a cinematic? Big ups to the team of Gorogoa. Sure, step away if you need to experience it over a longer time.

Gorogoa asks us to return to chapters in a larger seamless story. Stories need not be 20 minute matches or episodic levels. Sure, you can rush through the game or play it optimally But why? I think the greater theme is about the journey we take and the time it requires. Forcing them to think a bit more carefully and critically about what’s in front of them. The game challenges the perspective of the player. A tall boy in one frame may become smaller when he steps into another. A large star in one may become the light in a small lamp in another. Every frame has something that may be utilized completely differently in another. Gorogoa is a game and an examination of perspective. In the same way as passengers in a car may imagine a running man over buildings and obstacles Gorogoa finds a way to connect the seams of their reality to transverse different scenes across the story. Visually inclined players may be left wondering how the world in front of them may overlap seamlessly with other areas they’ve seen. The visual overlap between scenes is a lesson in design itself. But how we follow that story requires us as the player to pay attention and appreciate how this game was crafted. A young boy take a journey to make an offering to a greater force. But the presentation of it is what makes it truly great.

The functionality of the game is already clever. But once that progression is complete the panel is then used again for a completely different purpose. I think my favorite moment may be the train track puzzle because the player must find the track hidden in plain sight in one panel and align it correctly in another. The sketchbook feel of the game is easy on the eyes and makes the movement of different elements on the screen smooth. The music is light but finds places to bring intensity and indicate progression. It has a calming style that permeates the subject of every image and panel. With a blind playthrough time of about two hours this games is comparable to a longer film or binge of a season of a 20 min show. My original playthrough nearly tripled that action count as I went in blind and took me about two hours. The game can be completed in under 500 moves for the Dexterity achievement (50 gamerscore) and could take a player under 30 mins for the But Why? achievement (also 50 gamerscore). Reactions occur as edges connect to create a larger seamless image or when one panel overlaps another allowing for a number of actions to occur.

Players must interact with and arrange 4 story panels in a 2×2 grid to progress the story from one panel to the other. Put simply Gorogoa is a story-driven puzzle that the player must solve in order to offer 5 sacred fruits to the Gorogoa monster. Gorogoa truly is one of those standout games. We should care deeply about games that challenge us, games that challenge convention, and games that challenge themselves and their core. I fear that we reward games that fill our time more often than games that fulfill our time. We’re getting faster, our mainstream games are getting more basic, and our reflexes are getting challenged more than our insights or problem solving. I have a lot of thoughts about the gaming industry.
